Name
The name of this organization is the Alternative Orange.
Purpose
To provide critique-al knowledges to the University and other communities. The Alternative Orange will especially focus on publishing critiques of the dominant mainstream and academic knowledges which cannot get published elsewhere. The Alternative Orange will consider for publication any text which is in accord with its "Statement of Principles."
Membership
The Alternative Orange is open to all students, faculty members and members of the community who accept its “Statement of Principles”, regularly attend meetings, and contribute to the theoretical work necessary to produce the paper.
Affiliation
The Alternative Orange is a member of the Network of Alternative Student Press, which requires no fees and is based at the University of Vermont.
The A.O. agrees to abide by all rules and regulations established by Syracuse University for the operation of campus groups an organizations, as indicated in the Syracuse University Rules and Regulations, in all of its organizational activities, except in those situations in which the aforementioned rules and regulations or the manner in which they are enforced, are in conflict with local, state or federal law.
Officers
There will be two levels of positions to be filled in the organization: Editors and Editor-in-Chief. The position of Editor-in-Chief will be filled by one person.
The Editor-in-Chief is selected at the end of each semester by the working editorial staff, unless the position continues to be filled by the same person. The Editor-in-Chief must be a registered Syracuse University student.
The Editor-in-Chief has final say on all publication and other decisions, but can be overruled by a 3/4 majority of the staff.
The Editor-in-Chief's responsibilities include the following:
To make sure that the paper is completed and gotten to the press according to the publication schedule.
To ensure that a majority of the papers are distributed on the S.U. campus and that at least 10% are distributed to the wider Syracuse Community and other communities nationally and internationally.
To attend to, or assign someone to attend to, the budget, contacts with SGA and GSO, and copy editing and other tasks.
To give final approval on all advertisements which are published in the AO.
Meetings
There should be at least two meetings prior to the publication of an issue. There should be at least one general meeting for the purpose of theorizing and planning the issue, and another meeting for critical editing of submitted texts.
Amendments
The Alternative Orange shall not print articles, ads, or graphics which are oppressive along lines of gender, race, creed, color or sexual preference.
The Alternative Orange will accept for consideration texts written by Syracuse University students, faculty members, and members of the community at large, as well as texts submitted by its readers nationally and internationally.
The Alternative Orange will not accept any payment for advertisements and will accept advertisements (if at all) only on the basis of its intellectual and political solidarity with the concerns advertised.
Since the working editors of the Alternative Orange have final decision making capabilities in terms of what is and is not published in its pages, the editors will provide a space—in the form of a “Letters to the Editor” section—whereby those in and outside of the Syracuse University community may argue/present any critiques, disagreements and/or objections to
Any of the texts published in the AO
The editorial practices of the AO.
In case of any such publication, the editors must respond to the letter(s) either individually or collectively.
By-laws
The Alternative Orange is established on the basis of the principles of a producers' democracy. All members who have written, either individually or collectively, sustained theorizations of contemporary intellectual, social, political or cultural issues for the paper will have voting rights.
