New York, NY 10018 (212) 279-0707 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * (continuation) GARY NULL: I want to go back to Dr. Root Bernstein now. Dr. Bernstein, my concern is two-fold. First, who is paying attention to what is happening with the treatment ITSELF in creating conditions of immuno-suppression? And what can you tell us, from anything that you have read, about taking people who have tested positive for HIV (which actually doesn't show that they have the virus, but that they have been in contact with the virus at some point and their bodies have created an antibody), and then aggressively giving -- up to this point, as we have seen them giving to hundreds of thousands of Americans and to others throughout the World -- VERY toxic drugs to treat what no one can, at this point, prove was a deadly virus to begin with? There seems to be something inherently wrong-headed about that approach. DR. BERNSTEIN: Well, obviously, if we have the wrong cause, we're treating the wrong agent. That's fairly evident. Rather than answering your question in what clearly will be a negative way (AZT hasn't saved anyboby, and even the experts admit that it won't), what I think I'd rather do is answer it in a positive way, and talk about people who have survived and have gotten rid of their infections by what they've done. There are a number of studies. Unfortunately, most of them are informal. Many of your listeners probably know of Michael Kallen's [sp] book: "SURVIVING AIDS". Both his study and other informal studies have suggested that very few people who are long-term survivors of HIV infections, or of AIDS itself, have taken AZT, DDI or any of the other chain-terminators for more than a week or two. And most of these survivors have never taken them at all. Now, that's striking. One of the things that I called for before -- and again, nobody has done any proper study -- is simply to look at these long-term survivors! WHY are they long-term survivors? What is different about them? And some of these facts, like not using AZT, jump out at you. It would be nice to have that formalized. There are some other very interesting studies that need to be much more widespread and, I think, could become more widespread and save many lives. First of all, hemophiliacs have available a new treatment for their hemophilia which, apparently by pure chance, is taking care of many of their AIDS risks. I mentioned before that the factor concentrate which they need for their blood to coagulate properly has all sorts of junk in it. In the last couple of years, a number of pharmaceutical companies have developed what is called "ultra-purified factor-8". This is a factor-8 where all of the junk is taken out. In some cases, they make it using recombinant DNA techniques. So it's virtually a hundred percent pure. And when hemophiliacs are put on this ultra-purified factor, their T cell counts, which are often between 500 and 750 (whether they're HIV- infected or not, by the way), tend to go right up to normal. This is tremendous. This means that if you simply take the junk out of their blood transfusions and factor transfusions, they're immensely more healthy, immunologically. And these people are staying healthy. They're getting no indications that they are going on to develop AIDS. When you look at intravenous drug users, there are two studies -- one which was done in Switzerland, and one in Italy -- where the drug users were weaned off of their drugs completely, and malnutrition was taken care of. In the Italian study, they also prevented them from getting any transmitted diseases over a period of about five years. These were people who actually checked themselves into a monastery and worked for the monks there. Not something we could probably do for most people. But I think people who have a great enough desire to survive can certainly do equivalent things, or they can use safer sex measures and things like that. In any case, the upshot of the studies was that the rate of AIDS, simply by taking people off of the drugs, changing absolutely nothing else in their lives but taking them off the drugs, increased their time from HIV infection to AIDS by a factor of three, and increased their survival rate, after they developed AIDS, by a factor of three. By the time they took care of their malnutrition and their other concurrent infections, none of the people, over a period of five years, went on to develop AIDS. And they were all HIV-infected or HIV-positive at the beginning of these tests. Now, these are very strong indicators that if you control the co-factors, it doesn't matter what your HIV status is. You can remain healthy. GARY NULL: ... which would then state that HIV couldn't be the cause of AIDS. DR. BERNSTEIN: That's exactly right. At the very least, HIV might -- and I say "might" -- be an additive factor. My own view is that it's probably like all the other viruses and opportunistic infections: that once you have an impaired immune system, HIV can go in and cause some damage. Just like pneumocystis pneumonia doesn't affect a healthy person, but it can kill an AIDS patient who isn't treated for it. That may be the case with AIDS. But there is absolutely NO evidence that HIV, by itself, does anything inside a healthy body.
