                          SENTENCING DAY
                   by William M. Kunstler, Esq.
 
            When court convened at half past nine or so,
                The cast of characters was all in place,
            The convict and his counsel in a row.
                The prosecutor's stern official face.
            "Impose the maximum," the latter urged,
                And send this man away for twenty years
            So that our population will be purged
                Of those who prey upon our inner fears."
            Defendant's lawyer then implored the court
                To temper punishment with mercy's guise
            And keep his client's prison term as short
                As was consistent with such compromise.
            Without a shadow of internal strife,
                The judge deducted half a human life.
